JEWELLERY CARE AND USAGE POLICY

Last updated: 12 September 2026

This Jewellery Care and Usage Policy provides instructions for using, cleaning and storing products sold by Bombay Jewellery and Cosmetics, under the brand name Bombay Jewellery.

Following these instructions can help preserve the appearance and condition of artificial, imitation, fashion and gold-plated jewellery.

1. NATURE OF ARTIFICIAL JEWELLERY

Unless a product listing expressly states otherwise, our products are artificial, imitation, fashion or gold-plated jewellery.

Artificial and plated jewellery requires careful handling. Its colour, shine and condition may be affected by:

  • Water;
  • Moisture;
  • Humidity;
  • Sweat;
  • Skin chemistry;
  • Perfume;
  • Cosmetics;
  • Sanitizer;
  • Soap;
  • Chemicals;
  • Friction;
  • Sunlight;
  • Storage conditions; and
  • Frequency of use.

No plated jewellery should be considered permanently resistant to fading, tarnishing, scratching or colour change.

2. GENERAL CARE INSTRUCTIONS

To help maintain your jewellery:

  • Keep it clean and dry;
  • Handle it gently;
  • Avoid pulling, twisting or bending;
  • Put jewellery on after applying cosmetics and perfume;
  • Remove it before bathing or swimming;
  • Remove it before exercise or strenuous activity;
  • Remove it before sleeping;
  • Wipe it after use;
  • Store each product separately; and
  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and humidity.

3. AVOID WATER AND MOISTURE

Do not wear artificial or gold-plated jewellery while:

  • Bathing;
  • Showering;
  • Swimming;
  • Washing clothes or dishes;
  • Exercising;
  • Visiting a sauna or steam room;
  • Performing water-related household work; or
  • Participating in activities involving heavy perspiration.

Water and moisture may affect:

  • Plating;
  • Polish;
  • Adhesive;
  • Metal components;
  • Threads;
  • Stones;
  • Beads; and
  • Product structure.

If jewellery becomes wet, wipe it gently and allow it to dry completely before storage.

Do not use direct heat, a hair dryer or prolonged sunlight to dry jewellery.

4. PERFUME, COSMETICS AND CHEMICALS

Avoid direct contact with:

  • Perfume;
  • Deodorant;
  • Body spray;
  • Hair spray;
  • Lotion;
  • Cream;
  • Makeup;
  • Sunscreen;
  • Sanitizer;
  • Soap;
  • Shampoo;
  • Detergent;
  • Cleaning chemicals;
  • Bleach; and
  • Hair-colouring products.

Apply perfume, cosmetics and skincare products before wearing jewellery. Allow them to dry before putting the jewellery on.

Chemical exposure may cause fading, tarnishing, spotting, adhesive failure or discolouration.

5. SWEAT AND SKIN CHEMISTRY

Sweat and individual skin chemistry can affect artificial or plated jewellery differently.

After wearing jewellery:

  • Remove it with clean and dry hands;
  • Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth;
  • Allow any moisture to evaporate;
  • Do not store it while damp; and
  • Place it in a dry pouch or box.

Customers who perspire heavily may need to clean and dry jewellery more frequently.

A colour change caused by sweat, skin chemistry or ordinary wear is not necessarily a manufacturing defect.

6. CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS

For routine cleaning:

  1. Use a clean, soft and dry cloth.
  2. Wipe the surface gently without excessive pressure.
  3. Clean around stones and decorative areas carefully.
  4. Allow the product to remain completely dry.
  5. Return it to separate storage.

Do not ordinarily clean artificial or plated jewellery using:

  • Water soaking;
  • Toothpaste;
  • Baking soda;
  • Vinegar;
  • Lemon juice;
  • Alcohol;
  • Acetone;
  • Detergent;
  • Metal polish;
  • Abrasive powder;
  • Hard brushes;
  • Ultrasonic cleaners; or
  • Steam cleaners.

These methods may scratch the surface, remove plating, loosen stones or damage adhesives.

If a product requires special cleaning, follow the product-specific instructions or contact us before attempting to clean it.

7. STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS

Store jewellery:

  • In a clean and dry location;
  • In its original pouch or box where suitable;
  • Separately from other pieces;
  • Away from bathroom moisture;
  • Away from direct sunlight;
  • Away from heat;
  • Away from perfume and chemicals; and
  • Away from sharp objects.

Individual storage helps prevent:

  • Scratching;
  • Tangling;
  • Friction;
  • Stone damage;
  • Plating wear; and
  • Broken components.

A dry, jewellery-safe storage pouch may be used. If using a moisture-absorbing packet, keep it intact and away from children and direct contact with delicate jewellery surfaces.

8. NECKLACES, CHAINS AND MANGALSUTRAS

Necklaces, chains and mangalsutras should be:

  • Opened using the clasp;
  • Put on and removed gently;
  • Stored flat or loosely arranged;
  • Kept free from knots;
  • Protected from pulling;
  • Removed before sleeping; and
  • Kept away from heavy pendants not designed for the chain.

Do not pull a necklace over the head while its clasp is closed unless the design is specifically intended for that use.

Do not hang heavy jewellery from a delicate chain.

When travelling, secure the clasp and pack the chain separately to prevent tangling.

9. BANGLES, BRACELETS AND KADAS

Before purchasing bangles or kadas, select the correct size using the measurements supplied on the product page.

To wear or remove them:

  • Keep hands dry;
  • Avoid applying excessive force;
  • Do not force an incorrect size over the hand;
  • Do not bend a fixed bangle;
  • Use clasps or openings as designed; and
  • Avoid pressing stones or decorative settings.

Available sizes may include 2.4, 2.6, 2.8 and 2.10 where stated on the product page.

The availability of these sizes does not mean every bangle or kada design can be adjusted.

Breakage or distortion caused by forcing an incorrect size is not ordinarily a manufacturing defect.

10. EARRINGS

Earrings should be:

  • Inserted and removed gently;
  • Held by the main body rather than delicate stones;
  • Secured using the supplied backing;
  • Kept dry and clean;
  • Stored as a pair; and
  • Kept away from children.

Do not use force if the post, hook or backing does not align properly.

Earrings are generally non-returnable for hygiene reasons after delivery, except where damaged, defective, materially misdescribed or incorrectly supplied.

Stop using earrings if discomfort, redness or irritation occurs.

11. RINGS AND ADJUSTABLE PRODUCTS

Adjustable rings and other adjustable jewellery should be modified slowly and only as much as reasonably required.

Repeated or forceful bending may:

  • Weaken the metal;
  • Crack plating;
  • Loosen stones;
  • Distort the design; or
  • Cause breakage.

Do not repeatedly open and close an adjustable product.

Customer-caused damage resulting from excessive adjustment is not ordinarily covered by the Seven-Day Guarantee.

12. STONES, BEADS AND PEARLS

Decorative stones, beads and artificial pearls should be handled carefully.

Avoid:

  • Impact;
  • Dropping;
  • Scraping;
  • Pulling;
  • Water;
  • Chemical exposure;
  • Excessive pressure; and
  • Contact with hard surfaces.

Do not lift or hold a product only by a stone, bead, pearl, tassel or delicate decorative component.

If a stone becomes loose:

  • Stop wearing the product;
  • Preserve the stone if it detaches;
  • Do not use household glue;
  • Keep the product dry; and
  • Contact us if the issue may qualify under an applicable policy.

13. TRADITIONAL AND HEAVY JEWELLERY

Traditional, bridal, Pahadi and other heavy jewellery may require additional support and careful handling.

Customers should:

  • Use all supplied fastenings;
  • Avoid placing the full weight on one chain or thread;
  • Check clasps before use;
  • Avoid sudden movement;
  • Remove the jewellery while seated where possible;
  • Store it flat in suitable packaging; and
  • Avoid stacking heavy pieces on top of it.

Heavy jewellery should not be worn during strenuous movement or where it may catch on clothing.

14. THREADS, TASSELS AND FABRIC COMPONENTS

Jewellery containing threads, tassels, dori or fabric components should be kept especially dry.

Do not:

  • Pull the thread forcefully;
  • Wash fabric components;
  • Apply perfume directly;
  • Store them while damp;
  • Iron them; or
  • Place heavy products on top of them.

Natural loosening or fraying may occur with repeated use and should be addressed promptly before further wear.

15. CUSTOMIZED OR PERSONALIZED JEWELLERY

Customized jewellery should be used according to its design and product-specific instructions.

Customers should not:

  • Attempt to resize it at home;
  • Alter engraved sections;
  • Remove attached components;
  • Change threads or clasps without guidance; or
  • Ask an unauthorized person to modify the product during an active guarantee period.

Unauthorized modification may make it difficult to identify a manufacturing defect and may affect guarantee eligibility.

16. SKIN SENSITIVITY AND ALLERGIES

Individual skin sensitivity varies.

Artificial or plated jewellery may cause irritation in some people, especially those with:

  • Known metal allergies;
  • Sensitive skin;
  • Existing rashes;
  • Piercing irritation; or
  • Dermatological conditions.

We do not represent that every product is:

  • Hypoallergenic;
  • Nickel-free;
  • Allergy-free; or
  • Suitable for every skin type

unless the individual product listing expressly states so.

Stop wearing the product if you experience:

  • Redness;
  • Itching;
  • Swelling;
  • Burning;
  • Pain; or
  • Irritation.

Seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional where symptoms persist or are severe.

This Policy does not provide medical advice.

17. CHILDREN AND PETS

Jewellery may contain small parts that can create choking, swallowing or injury risks.

Keep jewellery:

  • Away from babies and young children;
  • Away from pets;
  • In secure storage; and
  • Under adult supervision when worn by a minor.

Jewellery is not a toy.

A parent or legal guardian is responsible for determining whether a product is suitable for a minor.

18. SAFE WEARING

Do not wear jewellery:

  • While sleeping;
  • During exercise;
  • While operating machinery;
  • During contact sports;
  • While cooking near open flames;
  • During bathing or swimming;
  • Where it may catch on equipment; or
  • Where a broken or sharp component could cause injury.

Stop using any product that becomes:

  • Broken;
  • Sharp;
  • Structurally loose;
  • Severely bent; or
  • Unsafe to wear.

19. TRAVEL CARE

When travelling:

  • Pack each product separately;
  • Secure chains and clasps;
  • Avoid overfilled jewellery boxes;
  • Keep jewellery dry;
  • Do not place heavy items on delicate products;
  • Carry valuable or delicate jewellery securely; and
  • Check that all components are present before leaving.

Bombay Jewellery and Cosmetics is not responsible for products lost, stolen or damaged during customer travel, except where liability cannot legally be excluded.

20. REPAIR AND ALTERATION

Do not attempt to repair jewellery using:

  • Household glue;
  • Adhesive tape;
  • Soldering equipment;
  • Paint;
  • Nail polish;
  • Cleaning chemicals; or
  • Unapproved replacement components.

Before seeking third-party repair during an active guarantee period, contact us.

Unauthorized repair, alteration or component replacement may:

  • Cause further damage;
  • Affect product appearance;
  • Prevent defect verification; and
  • Affect guarantee eligibility.

21. NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR

Normal wear and tear may include:

  • Gradual fading;
  • Loss of shine;
  • Minor scratches;
  • Surface marks;
  • Plating wear;
  • Minor thread wear;
  • Tarnishing caused by environment; and
  • Age-related loosening of decorative components.

The speed of wear differs according to use, climate, skin chemistry and care.

Normal wear and tear is not ordinarily treated as a manufacturing defect.

22. SEVEN-DAY GUARANTEE

A Seven-Day Guarantee applies only to products expressly marked “Guaranteed” on the product page or legal invoice.

Subject to inspection, the guarantee may cover:

  • Colour or plating defects;
  • Manufacturing defects;
  • Stone-setting defects; and
  • Breakage directly caused by a manufacturing defect.

It does not ordinarily cover damage caused by:

  • Water;
  • Sweat;
  • Perfume;
  • Chemicals;
  • Improper storage;
  • Impact;
  • Pulling;
  • Bending;
  • Incorrect sizing;
  • Unauthorized repair; or
  • Failure to follow these care instructions.

A claim must be submitted within the guarantee period under the Seven-Day Product Guarantee Policy.

23. LIFETIME 50% EXCHANGE

Following the care instructions may help maintain the product’s condition, but ordinary fading or signs of use do not automatically prevent a Lifetime 50% Exchange claim.

The programme applies only to products expressly marked eligible.

Final eligibility remains subject to:

  • Invoice verification;
  • Physical return;
  • Product identification;
  • Inspection;
  • Presence of principal parts; and
  • The Lifetime 50% Exchange Policy.

Deliberate damage, substitution, tampering or missing principal components may reduce or cancel eligibility.

24. REPORTING A DEFECT

If a product appears defective:

  • Stop wearing it;
  • Do not clean or repair it;
  • Preserve detached components;
  • Take clear photographs and video;
  • Retain the invoice and packaging; and
  • Contact us within the applicable period.

For an initial return claim, the issue should ordinarily be reported within 48 hours after delivery.

For an expressly Guaranteed product, an eligible claim may be submitted within the Seven-Day Guarantee period.

25. PRODUCT-SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS

Some products may include special instructions because of their:

  • Materials;
  • Plating;
  • Construction;
  • Stones;
  • Threads;
  • Adhesives;
  • Handmade components; or
  • Customized design.

Where product-specific instructions differ from this general Policy, the product-specific instructions should be followed, provided they were clearly disclosed and are lawful.

Customers may contact us before use if they are uncertain about the correct care method.

26. LIMITATION OF THIS POLICY

These care instructions are intended to help customers maintain their jewellery. They do not guarantee that a product will remain unchanged indefinitely.

Following the instructions does not make artificial jewellery:

  • Waterproof;
  • Sweat-proof;
  • Scratch-proof;
  • Tarnish-proof;
  • Permanently colour-fast; or
  • Indestructible.

Nothing in this Policy excludes or restricts a mandatory consumer remedy for a defective, incorrectly supplied or materially misdescribed product.

27. POLICY CHANGES

We may update this Policy to reflect product, material, operational, legal or safety developments.

The revised version will be published on the website with an updated effective date.

Changes will apply prospectively and will not unfairly affect a claim already accepted under an earlier applicable version.
